My friend Kathy commissioned me to paint the Old Cabin in Steamboat, Colorado. The son of longtime family friends brought his girlfriend here for a visit. Once they stepped inside, to her surprise, she discovered that he had decorated the cabin especially for her.
He then bent down on one knee and proposed!
From that moment on, this beautiful place became forever known as “The Special Place.”
Kathy gave me a year to complete the painting, but it ultimately took me two years to finish. The couple received the painting on their anniversary, making it an even more meaningful gift and a lasting reminder of the place where their love story took a very special turn.

Penn valley Plein Air Festival is held each year. I started in May of 2017, and painted 3 years. The other years I painted a few smaller painting. After the fact, I wish I would have painted with the canvas in the landscape direction. When doing the canvas prints, I decided to crop out the top and bottom.

Penn Valley Plein Air Festival was an event I participated in for 3 years running. I decided that last year to focus on one good painting in place of the quick paints. I painted this in 13 hours over 2 days. It was so windy and I fought the wind blowing the large canvas the whole time. When I painted this, I was going to add the fence. But time permited me to add the fence. So, hind sight, I wish I would have painted it landscape. But, I can crop out the excess sky and trees to make it what I should have done. I sold this painting at the show. You can select the cropped version for reproduction.-

Fresh Picked Flowers was a photo in a magazine of wild flowers in a can sitting on a rock. As I worked on the painting, I could not get the rock to look right. So I changed the rock to crossties and the flowers to sunflowers.

This painting began with rich layers of yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, and alizarin crimson. One student loved the beautiful background so much that she refused to paint the white overlay—and nearly packed up and left! With a little encouragement from the class, she reluctantly continued. Her finished painting turned out beautifully and became a memorable lesson in trusting the artistic process.
In the end, we all had a good laugh—and she had a painting she was proud of.

This composition derived from my imagination. In my art studio in Waycross, GA, I had a collage of items. Old Windows with curtians wheel barrel full of plants, vases, flowers, old nick nacks, old bottles, you name it. In art class we would sketch or paint the items. We often use a few items to come up with a unique theme. This was my unique theme. I hold the original.
